Elegy for Himself - Chidiock Tichborne

Please remember when making notes in your anthology not to write in full sentences! You must make brief notes around your poem and underline or highlight particular words or phrases of importance.

Section A

In the first line of the poem Tichborne expresses his worry and distress by calling it a "frost of cares".

1) Make a list of the other expressions in the poem which refer to the poet's sorrow.

2) Highlight these expressions in your anthology and make a note to say they are expressions of sorrow.

3) Look at the rhyme scheme in the poem. Notice that the final couplets at the end of each stanza (verse) use variations of the same rhyme: sun/done; spun/done; run/done.
Why has the poet chosen these words? How do they fit in with the theme of the poem?

4) Highlight the rhyme scheme in your anthology and make notes which briefly explain why the poet has chosen these words.

Section B
