Car Theft

There are two types of car theft, Theft for organised profit and theft for joyriding.

Theft for Profit

Most stolen cars are 'recycled', they are usually given a new identity and sold by dishonest dealers.  Engine numbers are changed and the milometer is altered to show a low mileage, respray and taking the registration number of a vehicle which has been scrapped.  Police have urged people to install alarms and steering wheel locks.

Joyriding

This is commited by the under 20 age group.  Most joyriders are in fact under 16, some as young as 10.  The motives are excitement and a challenge breaking into the car and starting it without the key.  They may also have pressure off friends or under the influence of alchol or drugs. Joyriding can also lead to civil disturbances like riots.
